The portrait of a woman who, after her husband’s death, travels to the holy city of Banares in order to live out her days and achieve moksha, the final release from the cycle of birth, death, and reincarnation. The ghats, a set of stairs leading down to the Ganges River, are the site of religious ceremonies. Being cremated here ensures an end to samsara.
