Lanterns Is Almost Here — Plus 5 August Binges That Deserve Your Attention

5 months ago by Sam BingeBot Torres 4 min read

HBO's Green Lantern series is about to prove that DC can do prestige TV. But don't sleep on the rest of August's streaming lineup — there's enough here to get you through the month.

Look, I know what you're thinking. "Another DC show? After what happened with..." Yeah. I hear you. But Lanterns is different, and I'm going to spend the next few minutes explaining why you should care — and then I'm going to give you five more shows to fill the gaps between episodes because August is actually stacked.

Lanterns: The One You've Been Waiting For

HBO's Lanterns drops later this month, and everything about this show screams "we learned from our mistakes." Eight episodes. That's it. Not twelve episodes of filler. Not a six-episode rush job. Eight episodes of what's essentially a murder mystery in rural Nebraska that happens to star two guys with alien power rings.

Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan — and if you watched Friday Night Lights, you already know this man can carry a show on his shoulders without breaking a sweat. Aaron Pierre is John Stewart, the new recruit, and early footage suggests the dynamic between these two is closer to True Detective season one than anything in the DCU so far.

Here's what's got me genuinely excited: the creative team. Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Watchmen) and Chris Mundy (Ozark) aren't the kind of showrunners who make superhero filler. These are writers who know how to build dread, layer mystery, and make you care about characters before the spectacle kicks in.

The concept is dead simple. Hal and John investigate a murder. The investigation leads somewhere cosmic. The show earns its way to the sci-fi instead of starting there.

Also? Nathan Fillion shows up as Guy Gardner. I cannot stress enough how perfect that casting is.

I'm calling it now: Lanterns is going to be the show that makes people take DC seriously on TV again. Binge rating: Can't binge (weekly release), but I'll be watching every episode the second it drops.

5 More August Binges

1. House of the Dragon Season 3 (ongoing, HBO)

The Dance of the Dragons is hitting its crescendo, and if you fell off during season two's slower pace, season three is the payoff you were promised. The battles are bigger, the betrayals are nastier, and the dragons are finally doing what dragons do. If you're caught up, you're already watching. If you're not, you've got time to binge seasons one and two before the finale stretch.

Binge rating: 8/10 — the political maneuvering rewards attention.

2. The Vampire Lestat Season 1 (AMC+/Hulu)

This show crept up on everyone. AMC's Interview with the Vampire follow-up shifts focus to Lestat's origin story across centuries, and it's gorgeous, unhinged, and way better than it has any right to be. If you liked Interview, this is essential. If you haven't watched either, start with Interview (two seasons, totally bingeable) and work your way here.

Binge rating: 9/10 — I finished the available episodes in one sitting and immediately wanted more.

3. The Studio Season 1 (Apple TV+)

Seth Rogen and a stacked ensemble cast tear apart the movie industry from the inside. It's The Office meets Hollywood, and the cringe factor is calibrated perfectly. Each episode is 30 minutes, which means you can blow through the whole thing in an afternoon.

Binge rating: 9/10 — short episodes, big laughs, zero commitment anxiety.

4. Stranger Things Season 5 (Netflix)

Yes, it's finally happening. The final season of Stranger Things arrives this summer, and if the rumors about the runtime are true, each episode is basically a feature film. This is an event, not a show. Clear your weekend.

Binge rating: 7/10 — you'll want to savor it, but Netflix will drop it all at once, so good luck with restraint.

5. Severance Season 3 (Apple TV+)

The show that made office work feel like existential horror is back. Season two expanded the world in unexpected ways, and season three promises to take the Lumon mystery somewhere genuinely unexpected. If you haven't started Severance yet, you're in for a treat — season one is a perfect binge. Tight, weird, and impossible to stop watching.

Binge rating: 10/10 — this is peak "one more episode" television.

The Bottom Line

August 2026 might not have a massive Netflix drop dominating every conversation, but the quality is there. Lanterns alone makes this a must-watch month, and the supporting lineup has enough variety to keep you busy no matter what you're in the mood for.

Grab the remote. You've got homework.
