Captain's Log: The NYCC Away Mission Briefing — Everything Star Trek at New York Comic Con Beyond the Starfleet Academy Panel

1 day ago by T'Nara Vex 4 min read

New York Comic Con opens October 8 with a Star Trek schedule that goes well past Saturday's Starfleet Academy panel: Nacelle action figures, a Fanhome USS Athena debut, a Borg Queen promo at the Magic booth and a documentary panel with Spiner, Visitor and Crosby.

Captain's log, stardate 103928.7. The away team is packing. New York Comic Con opens tomorrow at the Javits Center, and most of the Trek conversation is about one hour on Saturday afternoon. There is a lot more on the schedule than that, so here is the full mission briefing.

Dates are October 8-11. Details below come from TrekCore's October 6 guide unless I name another outlet.

The headline panel (Saturday, October 10)

The Star Trek Universe panel is at 3:15 PM ET on the Empire Stage, for one hour. Holly Hunter, Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané and Bob Picardo are listed for Starfleet Academy, with co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. William Shatner joins as a special guest to mark the 60th anniversary; TrekNews and Variety reported that lineup in September. TrekCore says the panel is expected to bring a teaser and a release date for the second and final season, with the premiere expected in early 2027. That is TrekCore's expectation, not a confirmed date, so treat it as a hope until someone on stage says it.

We covered that panel when the lineup broke. This post is about everything else.

Thursday, October 8: Nacelle Company

At 12:45 PM in North Room 406.2, The Nacelle Company presents "Nacelle's 2027 and Beyond," with CEO Brian Volk-Weiss. TrekCore lists the topic as Star Trek action figures and other projects. If you collect, this is the session that tells you what is coming to shelves next year.

Friday, October 9: Fanhome and Magic

  • Fanhome, Booth #1445: Karim Diané signs autographs from 11 AM to 12:30 PM and 2 PM to 3:30 PM. Limited gold-plated U.S.S. Enterprise-A models are on sale at $250 each, and Fanhome debuts its U.S.S. Athena model from Starfleet Academy.
  • Magic panel: Wizards of the Coast has a dedicated panel from 7:45 to 8:45 PM in North Room 406.3, with product announcements and reveals, according to Magic's own convention page.

All weekend: Magic: The Gathering, Booth #1301

Magic's booth is built around a U.S.S. Enterprise-inspired experience. According to Wizards, you can complete an interactive mission to find your Magic colour, grab a Star Trek Welcome Deck while supplies last, and pose in a transporter photo op. Attendees can also pick up a promo Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest. Wizards describes it as a Legendary Artifact Creature that gives your artifact creatures +2/+0 and lets you assimilate a creature card from an opponent's graveyard when it enters. The booth is also billed as early access to the Star Trek set before its official release.

Sunday, October 11: the documentary panel

At 11 AM in North Room 405, filmmakers discuss The Sixty Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television & The World, joined by Brent Spiner, Nana Visitor and Denise Crosby. The film opens in Regal cinemas on October 9. I could only find this panel in TrekCore's guide, so check the NYCC app for room changes.

What to watch for

One thread connects the panel and the side events. Starfleet Academy ends with its second season, and the franchise has no announced series after that. Everything on this schedule, from the toy panel to the Borg Queen, is a reminder that Trek's cultural footprint is bigger than the streaming slate.

For what it is worth, Robert Picardo said in July that season 2 will include "a big medical disaster thriller" and pairs the Doctor with Karim Diané's Jay-Den Kraag in a mentoring relationship. So there is at least one concrete story detail to listen for on Saturday.

Trek has always lived in conventions as much as on screen. The first true Star Trek convention was held in New York in January 1972, for a show that was already off the air. Sixty years on, the fans are still the ones keeping it going.

Make it so.

Live long and prosper.
